Our club chose the "All Hands on Deck" theme because we are focusing on monthly done-in-a-day club-wide volunteer projects this year. These projects will involve everyone serving together and living the volunteer spirit as a club!
The membership event consisted of nautical decor, themed refreshments, fun door prizes, and a great hands-on experience of the different types of service projects in our club.
We also had a local jeweler with Premier Designs Jewelry set up a shopping table and a percentage of all sales went to a local women's and children's shelter. This was a fun, creative way to kick-off our club year!
The event was a huge success and we all had a wonderful time! As a result, the JWC of Lake Murray gained 14 new members!

During the first week of October, many parts of our state experienced torrential rain and very serious flooding. Major parts of our city were shut down and the destruction and loss was unimaginable. However, as hard as it was to experience this, it was also very encouraging and inspiring to see so many pull together and serve their neighbors to help our city and state recover. Virtually all residents, near and far, were "Living the Volunteer Spirit"!
Due to the flooding, we met at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington. At the meeting, we helped pack Snack Packs for children in local schools and collected food for Sharing God's Love food bank in Irmo. Our club is also planning to participate in January in the Walk of Life/Race for Life to support Palmetto Health's Breast Center.
October was also Domestic Violence Awareness month. Club members all wore purple to the club meeting and the Home Life Department provided information regarding domestic violence awareness and related news.
During the club meeting, we inducted many of our new members too! We are thrilled to have these ladies in our club and we are looking forward to a really great year serving the Lake Murray community together.
_________________________________________________________________________________In November, our club heard from Palmetto Place Children's Shelter. Grace, a representative from the shelter, shared information with us about this wonderful organization and how our club can help support it's efforts to provide a safe, nurturing home for children in the Midlands.
The shelter was founded in the 1970s by the JWC of Columbia and is an emergency shelter for abused or neglected children, or unaccompanied teens, in Richland, Lexington, and Kershaw counties.
