Last weekend, members
of the Junior Women's Club of Lake Murray spent part of the morning
"Keeping the Midlands Beautiful" along Corley Mill Road in Lexington.
A majority of the litter along the road consisted
of Styrofoam packaging, fast food bags, bottles/cans and cigarette
butts. Cigarette butts are the most
frequently littered item in America. They represent nearly 30
percent of the items documented in nationwide cleanup initiatives.
Established in 1989 to
serve Richland and Lexington Counties, the mission of Keep the Midlands Beautiful
is "to engage, inspire and educate the Midlands to invest in our community
through litter prevention, recycling and beautification." The non-profit
was able to supply the club with safety vests and bags for pick-up.
