CSC Habitat for Humanity

The Junior Women's Club of Lake Murray and the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club made a joint donation today to Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity!

Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1985 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Since 1985, Central South Carolina Habitat for Humanity has built more than 250 homes in partnership with adults and children in Richland and Lexington counties.

Habitat is about more than housing.

Habitat homeowners receive financial education, help build their houses and pay an affordable mortgage. A decent place to live and an affordable mortgage create a situation where homeowners can save more, invest in education, pursue opportunity and have more financial stability. With our help, homeowners achieve the strength, stability and independence they need to build a better future for themselves and for their families.

The JWC of Lake Murray recently participated in a "Build Day" in Columbia. We had such a great time learning new skills and all about this wonderful organization that we are eager to return for another Build Day!

We were trained by the Habitat crew and they provided all the materials we needed. Siding was taken down and installed, walls were put up, windows were cut and installed, and many nails were hammered! We even got to meet and work alongside the new homeowner whose house we were building!

Thank you, CSC Habitat for Humanity, for all the great things you do and we can't wait to come back!

Nancy K. Perry Children's Shelter

The Junior Women's Club of Lake Murray & the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's made a joint donation today to Nancy K. Perry Children's Shelter! We are very thankful to be able to support this wonderful, local organization for children!

Prior to 1972, in Lexington County and most other places in the country, many children who needed protection were kept in jail cells because there was nowhere else for them to go.

Then, through a concerted effort of Lexington County Citizens, the Shelter, originally known as Welcome Home, opened its doors.

After later being known as the Lexington County Children’s Shelter, its name changed in 1992 to honor Ms. Nancy Perry, a volunteer, houseparent, and former executive director.

The Nancy K. Perry Children’s Shelter, Inc. is a residential program for the temporary, emergency care of children who have experienced physically or sexually abused, neglected, abandoned, exploited or caught in the midst of family crisis.
The Shelter operates twenty-four hours a day, year-round to care for children from birth to 18 years of age. The youngest child the Shelter has served so far was 8 hours old.
The Shelter is the oldest facility of its type in South Carolina and serves approximately 85 to 100 children annually. Since the Shelter was opened, it has cared for more than 5,000 children.

While in placement, children attend public school, receive counseling, medical care, recreational, cultural, social, and religious opportunities, as well as lots of love.

Making a Splash with Canoeing For Kids

The Junior Women's Club of Lake Murray and the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club recently made a joint donation to Canoeing For Kids

Canoeing for Kids is a non-profit organization serving as a free recreational outlet for disadvantaged children. Both the JWC of Lake Murray and the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club are excited to work together to support organizations like Canoeing for Kids.

Canoeing for Kids' primary function is to provide free canoeing, and kayaking trips for underprivileged children.  On average, at least 1,000 kids have benefited from the experience of being "on the water" and "in the woods" each season. Teamwork, self-reliance, sense of accomplishment, as well as awareness and conservation of nature is achieved while the kids simply have fun.

Free services are provided to children's homes, camps for unhealthy, physically and mentally challenged children and any other qualifying group. Adventures are catered to the individual group's skills and/or limitations. Follow Canoeing For Kids on Facebook for all the latest updates.
